Hello Indiewire community - it's been awhile - here I am back in Silver Spring. It has been eight months since I left SILVERDOCS but when I walked up on opening night, it felt like I had never left. The AFI Sliver Theatre will always be my home and the old historic theater my version of church. And the fact that I still get free popcorn doesn't hurt. The staff did a great job - Sky Sitney put together a stunning, heartbreaking, complex lineup of films, Adrian Spencer and Cindy Miller make the Festival run smooth and Jody Arlington as always makes sure the films get the press attention they deserve. The International Documentary Conference had its strongest year yet with Diana Ingraham at the helm. I had fun talking with my old boss Patricia Finneran at the Cinema Lounge and congratulating her on her fifth Silverdocs success. Funny how time flies. Since they added two days to the Festival, there's still more to come, but our industry friends from other towns have mostly left. It was a treat to be a guest at the Festival and be able to actually sit in the theater and watch documentaries the way they should be enjoyed. A few film highlights for me were Sascha Paladino's THROW DOWN YOUR HEART, with a post-screening performance by Bela Fleck and Malwian legend Cheick Hamala Diabate; Tia Lessin & Carl Deal's TROUBLE THE WATER - a heartbreaking and hopeful film about hurricane katrina. I also was lucky enough to catch the world premiere of HERB & DOROTHY by Megumi Sasaki - a film about legendary civilian art collectors Herb and Dorothy Vogel. I want to write more about this charming film later, but I must share the film's tagline: "You don't have to be a Rockefeller to collect art. He was apotal clerk. She was a librarian. With their modest means, the couple managed to build one of the most contemporary art collections in history."

There was an abundance of parties, with a more swanky, centrally located Cinema Lounge and the essential Moose Lodge and Quarry House late night gatherings. I also caught Peter Broderick's enlightening talk and took a 1/2 day workshop on social marketing and outreach.

I am a product of the power of documentary - the characters of films I have seen along the way have changed my life and made me want to be a better person. When I worked for SILVERDOCS, we would always wax poetic about the power of docs to inspire and call you to action. I ended up being a living example of this, as Oliver Hodge's 2007 film GARBAGE WARRIOR moved me so much that I decided to work on the biggest environmental issue of our time - building pollution. I landed at the U.S. Green Building Council, a non-profit working for healthy buildings and communities within a generation. I haven't really left the film world, so I'll try to pop back in here from time to time and focus a bit on a cross-section of film and the environment. If you live in D.C. there is still time to catch the award-winning films through Tuesday eve.

The film subjects had such a blast at SILVERDOCS, that Cindy thinks Frank may put it above his Oxo exprience in the 80's as an alltime high. By no means can we compete with 80's pop, but I am glad that we delivered on the experience for them. Save this read for when you really need a good laugh.
This is definitely the best year yet for SILVERDOCS. I'm here at the AFI Silver winding down and reflecting on the last four days. A few highlights from my day yesterday include a Silver Session discussion with Josh Braun of Submarine Entertainment, a fabulous q&a with director Oliver Hodge and film subject Michael Reynolds at the US premiere of GARBAGE WARRIOR, filmmaker party at the Moose Lodge, complete with trucker swag in honor of Doug Pray's BIG RIG and last but not least a spontaneous dance party in the auto repair shop parking lot with some of our international guests.
Our guests are really energized about all there is to take in and there are still two full days to go.

Here's a glimpse of Saturday and Sunday:

CLOSING NIGHT FILM, RECEPTION, and PARTY
East Coast Premiere of ARCTIC TALE by Sarah Robertson and Adam Ravetch
6:30 p.m. in the AFI Silver Theatre.
National Geographic Films, the producers of MARCH OF THE PENGUINS, and Paramount Vantage, the distributors of AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, present this
epic adventure that explores the vast world of the Great North. The film follows the walrus, Seela and the polar bear, Nanu, on their journey from birth to parenthood in the Arctic wilderness.

Closing night reception to follow in the Cinema Lounge with an after-party at Jackie’s Restaurant.

11:00 a.m. World Premiere of LIVING GODDESS
Director Ishbel Whitaker and the Kumari herself present the World Premiere of LIVING GODDESS, a lush tale of a girl-child known as the Kumari, considered to be the incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali.. She lives a peaceful and sheltered life, worshipped even by her parents, while outside her palace, the people are fighting for democracy against a despotic king, the fruition of an ancient prophecy.

The Kumari in attendance!

12:45 p.m. World Premiere of MADE IN LA
Director Almudena Carracedo’s film follows Latina garment workers expending blood, sweat and tears to successfully organize against not only the sweatshops, but the glossy mall stores where there labor is displayed.

3:00 p.m. Director Stephanie Johnes presents the DC Premiere of DOUBLETIME, about competitive fusion double-dutch jump rope, which combines dance, gymnastics, and acrobatics to a pulsing soundtrack. Two winning teenage teams from the Carolinas prepare and compete for nationals at the Apollo Theater in Harlem—and fight intimidation by the world-class Japanese.

Local champion Double Dutch team the Kangaroo kids will perform outdoors preceding the screening.

5:00 p.m. The Sterling Award Ceremony hosted by Arch Campbell will take place in the Cinema Lounge. Filmmakers will be awarded Sterling Awards for Best Feature, Best Short and Best Music Documentary. This year three new awards will be presented as well: The Cinematic Vision Award, the WITNESS Award, and the SILVERDOCS/American Film Market Award. A Best documentary in
the Beyond Belief strand will also be awarded.

6:00 p.m. Director Shimon Dotan presents HOTHOUSE, a gripping look at life behind the prison walls for some of the nearly 10,000 Palestinians incarcerated in Israeli prisons and how prison creates a brotherhood that fuels the political divide.

10:30 p.m. Director G.J. Echternkamp presents the DC Premiere of FRANK AND CINDY, which explores unrealized dreams and the complexity of love in a hilarious portrait. Family life gets disturbing when dad was a one-hit-wonder ‘80s pop star and mom wishes he was so much more.
Frank and Cindy in attendance!

SILVERDOCS is rapidly approaching and I can’t wait to meet some of our amazing special guests, one of whom will be a real life goddess. That’s right, a goddess. The 8-year-old girl is considered to be the incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali, and she’s going to be gracing us with her presence in support of the World Premiere of LIVING GODDESS.

SILVERDOCS is especially honored to have Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme with us this year. We are celebrating his body of documentary work at our Guggenheim Symposium, and he’s presenting the theatrical World Premiere of his latest documentary NEW HOME MOVIES FROM THE LOWER 9TH WARD.

I can’t forget to mention that the awe-inspiring Reverend Billy from WHAT WOULD JESUS BUY? (check out his TODAY show interview), the precision jump ropers from DOUBLETIME and the dysfunctional husband and wife duo from FRANK AND CINDY will all be at SILVERDOCS in their uninhibited glory.

If you haven’t committed to coming to DC for SILVERDOCS, there is still time. It’s a hop, skip, jump or Chinatown bus away from Manhattan…

SILVERDOCS GOES CARBON NEUTRAL
The Festival announced this week that it will become the first carbon neutral documentary festival in the US through a partnership with Clean Currents, LLC, a DC-area sustainably-operated clean energy business that is donating carbon offsets. The company will measure the carbon emissions from the energy used by the
film festival and purchase clean energy credits to completely offset them. Clean Currents will also advise and help SILVERDOCS promote environmental initiatives at the Fest.

"SILVERDOCS is thrilled to partner with Clean Currents to do our part in the race to save our planet. Documentary film has long been at the center of social awareness on environmental issues. Taking the lead from Al Gore and Davis Guggenheim's AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, now we're not only talking, but changing how we do business. This June, SILVERDOCS will be carbon neutral, and we invite the documentary community to join us in going green," said Festival Director Patricia Finneran.
"We're pleased to help SILVERDOCS make an amazing statement about the need to fight global warming and protect our environment," noted Gary Skulnik, Clean Currents' President. "Silver Spring was home to the mother of the environmental movement, Rachel Carson
, and now it's home to the first carbon neutral documentary film festival in the entire country." It is the 100th anniversary of Rachel Carson's birth. The Silver Spring activist and writer is commonly credited with starting the environmental movement with her book, Silent Spring.

If you live in the DC area, check out Clean Currents.
You can purchase clean energy from them and it just shows up on your regular power bill that a portion is for wind power.

of or characteristic of an unsophisticated rural person, esp. from the South; hick: a corn-pone accent.

This is not the season to take in such lurid pulp, as I'm watching about 20 docs a week, but thanks to A.O. Scott's review of BLACK SNAKE MOAN,
I almost don't need to see the flick.
In a year when the Oscar went global SILVERDOCS is particularly proud to have launched THE BLOOD OF YINGZHOU DISTRICT (Oscar winner for best Documentary Short), which shines a light on the international AIDS crisis, was the centerpiece of our series of Global Health films. Our heartfelt congratulations to Ruby Yang and Tom Lennon on their Oscar win.

SILVERDOCS celebrates the power of documentary to draw people together around the issues that matter. No film exemplified that better than AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH. We salute our 2006 keynote speaker Former Vice President Al Gore on his Oscar win. Gore challenged SILVERDOCS audiences to use their power of storytelling to make a difference, and be actively engaged in our democracy. As Gore says, “it’s not a political issue, it’s a moral issue.” Explore ways to walk the doc talk at <a href=<"http://www.climatecrisis.net">Climate Crisis Site

I had the pleasure of attending the world premiere of Jeff Krulik's film THE LEGEND OF MERV CONN at the AFI Silver last Sunday. It is a delightful documentary tribute to Merv Conn, a Silver Spring, MD native, who has been teaching and performing the accordian for over 75 years. The sold-out show was also a celebration of Merv's 87th birthday and the accordion playing community came out in full force to honor Merv. To top it off, there was a post-screening accordion performance with about 15 accordion players on stage and birthday cake in the lobby. Merv worked the crowd and crooned to some of his all-time favorites, including "You Made Me Love You." It was amazing to see so many over-70's in the audience and even better to feel the love in the crowd. Over 20 people raised their hands when Jeff asked how many people were former students of Merv Conn. I would kill to visit Merv at his house, that holds over 50 antique accordions - how fabulous! Jeff Krulik is the DC native documentary filmmaker who brought us HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT and my second favorite, NEIL DIAMOND PARKING LOT.
In case you live in DC, there is an encore screening
this Sunday Feb 25 at 4pm.

In 2006, SILVERDOCS turned its attention to the issues of global health
and helped launch several international award-winning films in the US marketplace. Documentary film can make a difference in raising awareness about compelling social issues, and the recognition of these films by DGA and the Motion Picture Academy, the leading organizations in the field goes a long way towards bringing these documentaries to a wider audience.
It is still a challenging marketplace for international films and stories with a global perspective. We are so proud to have contributed to the launch of these amazing stories, BEFORE FLYING BACK TO EARTH about pediatric cancer treatment in Lithuania and BLOOD OF YINGZHOU DISTRICT about the dramatic story of a young HIV AIDS orphan in China.

The 2006 Sterling Award, Best Feature helped Heidi and Rachel secure distribution for JESUS CAMP. We are proud to have helped launch this compelling film.

Good luck Heidi, Rachel, Ruby and Thomas at the Oscars on February 25 and to Keven, Michael, Mat, Ricki and Annie at the Independent Spirit Awards on February 24! What a weekend that will be!
