Need more proof that hand drawn animation is alive and thriving in Europe? Submitted for your approval: Aunt Hilda! (Tante Hilda!), a new feature film by Jacques-Remy Girerd and Benedict Chieux (Raining Cats and Frogs, Mia and Migou). The fourth animated feature from French studio, Folimage (A Cat In Paris), it opens in Paris on February 12th 2014. Here is the trailer (in French) - it has a 1970s-vibe and I love it.

The plot (translated from French):

"Lover of nature, Aunt Hilda, preserves, in her plant museum, thousands of plants worldwide. Many are endangered. Meanwhile, a new cereal, Attilem, developed by the "industry", is cultivated with so little water, no fertilizer, and produces yields prodigious, it appears as a miracle solution to curb hunger and take over of petroleum reserves are depleted. But the disaster is not far. "

A Cat in Paris took me completely by surprise so I'm actually anticipating this film quite a lot, even if I don't know any French!

I wouldn't say hand drawn animation is thriving in Europe. It's more like each project is handled as a unique technical work. Folimages is attached to hand drawn animation. But most productions aren't. And when they do want to keep a hand-drawn aspect, they may actually go for computer animation. Ernest and Celestine is done in flash, and a lot of its watercolored aspect is actually computer generated.

Of the 6 french animated movies released in 2014 (that I can remember of), only Tante Hilda is hand drawn. Others (Minuscule , La Mécanique du coeur, Pourquoi j'ai (pas) mangé mon père, Astérix et le domaine des dieux, le Prince et les 108 démons) are CGI.
