Animation Scoop Editor Jerry Beck is a writer, animation producer and author of over 15 books on animation history. He is a former studio exec with Nickelodeon Movies and Disney, was instrumental in launching Animation Magazine, co-founded Cartoon Brew and has written for The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. He is on the faculty of Woodbury University in Burbank and his latest book is The Art of Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

Immersed in Movies: Laughing it Up at the 'LEGO Movie' Press Conference

Maybe it was the wacky LEGOLAND backdrop (with the marvelous miniature set behind them), or the funny nature of the movie itself, or the fact that Morgan Freeman was such a hoot, but the LEGO Movie press conference was even more fun than expected. Among the participants were directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller; voice talent Chris Pratt, Freeman, Will Arnett, and Elizabeth Banks; producer Dan Lin; and animation supervisor Chris McKay. Here are a few of the highlights:

Here's the full film program of animated features for the upcoming New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) which runs from March 7-30th. The 17th annual event will be presenting a wide array of films (and shorts) for all ages including a special preview screening of Muppets Most Wanted and Rio 2.

I recently chatted with the Oscar nominees for Feral (Daniel Sousa), Get a Horse! (Lauren MacMullan), Mr. Hublot (Laurent Witz), Possessions (Shuhei Morita), and Room on the Broom (Max Lang). We discussed personal connections and challenges. Interestingly, all five of the films explore the theme of adjusting to change in our lives.

Leading to The Oscars, the Academy will present screenings and panels celebrating this year’s animated nominees. The shorts will screen February 25th and a panel on animated features, hosted by John C. Reilly, will take place on Friday February 28th.

Producer Arthur Rankin, Jr. - of the animation producing team Rankin-Bass - has passed away. Among his films and TV specials, the iconic Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, the classic Frosty The Snowman, the first version of The Hobbit and the influential Mad Monster Party.
