Animation Scoop Editor Jerry Beck is a writer, animation producer and author of over 15 books on animation history. He is a former studio exec with Nickelodeon Movies and Disney, was instrumental in launching Animation Magazine, co-founded Cartoon Brew and has written for The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. He is on the faculty of Woodbury University in Burbank and his latest book is The Art of Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

Four students have been selected as winners for Animation in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 41st Student Academy Awards competition. They will arrive in Los Angeles for a week of industry activities that will culminate in the awards ceremony on Saturday, June 7th, at 6 p.m., at the DGA Theater in Hollywood.

Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return reunites Dorothy Gale, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man - and just about every cliche of low-budget CG animation. While the filmmakers simplified its convoluted plot, they failed to produce a story that’s compelling or even interesting.

Coinciding with the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, comes Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return, an indie animated musical from Summertime and Clarius, made by Prana Studios. Adapted from the initial book by Roger Baum, the great grandson of L. Frank Baum, co-director Will Finn (The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast, The Secret of NIMH) discusses his first foray in helming a CG-animated feature.

A cult film I've really enjoyed since I saw it way back when as a midnight show is Richard Elfmann's Forbidden Zone (1980). Thirty-four years later(!) Elfman is using Crowdfunding to raise money to film a sequel. Animator Jeaux Janovsky created this promo to help the cause.

ASIFA-East will hold its 45th Annual Animation Festival Awards Ceremony on Sunday, May 18th, 2014 at The New School’s Tishman Auditorium. Awards will be given out across a variety of categories and craft from student, commercial, and independent entries to excellence in writing, design, and animation.

ANIME REVIEW: "Fairy Tail"

The comedy-adventure Fairy Tail has a rollicking, character-based humor that’s become all too rare in American animation. Based on a manga by Hiro Mashima, the TV series was only supposed to run for 48 episodes. But it was expanded to more than 170 episodes, and has already spun off one feature, several OVA’s and scads of character merchandise.
