Animation Scoop Editor Jerry Beck is a writer, animation producer and author of over 15 books on animation history. He is a former studio exec with Nickelodeon Movies and Disney, was instrumental in launching Animation Magazine, co-founded Cartoon Brew and has written for The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. He is on the faculty of Woodbury University in Burbank and his latest book is The Art of Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

March 1st: Group Art Show Tribute to Jay Ward "Moosylvania"

Mark your calendar, this is gonna be good. Over 100 visual artists and renowned animators are creating a piece of original art inspired by Jay Ward & his cartoon characters for a group art show taking over The Van Eaton Gallery in Sherman Oaks next month - and the opening night party is going to be a blast.

GKids Picks Up Cartoon Saloon's "Song Of The Sea"

GKIDS has signed a distribution agreement with Kilkenny-based studio Cartoon Saloon for the North American rights to their upcoming animated feature "Song Of The Sea". The long awaited second feature film from Oscar-nominated director Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells), is beautifully hand drawn and scheduled to premiere in late 2014.

Floyd Norman on "The View"

In case you missed it - one of our own, Floyd Norman, appeared today on ABC's The View this morning. Floyd was the first black animator hired by the Walt Disney studios in 1956 - and he has made major contributions to Sleeping Beauty, Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Toy Story 2, etc.

In two weeks the animation community will come together for the 20th edition of "The Afternoon of Remembrance". It's an annual non-denominational celebration of all our friends - the artists, writers, producers, voice actors - who passed away the previous year.

There’s no denying it - from the banquet of production art, concept sketches, backgrounds and other details that festoon this tome, Dreamworks' latest animated feature is sumptuous indeed. The Art of Mr. Peabody And Sherman explains what Lion King co-director Rob Minkoff saw in reviving these classic Jay Ward characters. And it looks pretty cool.

Move over, Lego. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Disney Interactive and Google are teaming up to launch “Blank: A Vinylmation Love Story,” an original animated short film. The film will be available exclusively on Google Play, and will be screened starting Friday at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood.

The two most interesting nominees this year for the Animated Short Oscar embody a division that has characterized animation for at least a century. Disney's Get a Horse! is a Hollywood cartoon in the best sense of the term. In contrast, while Shuhei Morita's Possessions showcases animation as an extension of traditional fine and graphic arts.

There's more than meets the eye in The LEGO Movie. It's not only smart and witty but it also explores the essence of LEGO and Master Building and, finally, storytelling in a Pirandello-like way. I spoke with directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (at LEGOLAND, of course) about making a subversive movie at Warner Bros. that pokes fun of studios, franchises, and safe storytelling.
