Animation Scoop Editor Jerry Beck is a writer, animation producer and author of over 15 books on animation history. He is a former studio exec with Nickelodeon Movies and Disney, was instrumental in launching Animation Magazine, co-founded Cartoon Brew and has written for The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. He is on the faculty of Woodbury University in Burbank and his latest book is The Art of Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

The world of animation grew darker and my own world grew sadder when Frederic Back passed away the day before Christmas at 89. Hayao Miyazaki remains the most admired artist in animation, but Frederic was the most beloved.

I caught up with Chris Wedge again when he was in town recently to revisit the underrated Epic, his most personal film and one of my favorites of the year. The lush swashbuckler has a heartfelt father/daughter story and looks beneath the surface in discovering hidden truths about life and nature. We also looked forward to his first live-action feature, Monster Trucks (May 29, 2015).

Fox Animation Studios and Blue Sky Studios have officially green-lit Ice Age 5, slated for a July 15, 2016 release. This announcement officially makes the summer of '16 the Summer of Studio Sequels, with Pixar releasing Finding Dory and DreamWorks releasing How to Train Your Dragon 3.
