Animation Scoop Editor Jerry Beck is a writer, animation producer and author of over 15 books on animation history. He is a former studio exec with Nickelodeon Movies and Disney, was instrumental in launching Animation Magazine, co-founded Cartoon Brew and has written for The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. He is on the faculty of Woodbury University in Burbank and his latest book is The Art of Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

New York's Animation Block Party 2013

Animation Block Party is certainly the premier animation festival on the East Coast - dedicated to exhibiting all genres of the world's best independent, professional and student animation. I'm happy to announce that I am participating in this year's event as both a juror and host/curator of a special screening.

Pixar has come a long way technologically since Monsters, Inc., so the design challenge with the Monsters University prequel was to expand the world through creative engineering while maintaining consistency. They call it "Monsterfication," and I went deeper into the process with production designer Ricky Nierva and sets art director Robert Kondo.

Gatchaman is best known in the US as the anime series Battle of the Planets or G-Force. But the property was created in 1972 for animation studio Tatsunko Productions. Toho is releasing a new live action film based on the characters on August 24th. Based on the trailer released today, this looks surprisingly good!

Director Dan Scanlon and his crew do a great job of spoofing campus life in this follow-up to Monsters Incorporated. If much of the story is predictable - a kind of Revenge of the Nerds with extra eyes, heads, tentacles and fur - it’s still a lot of fun.

The 1985 syndicated series Robotech lives on today with sequels, prequels, comic books, toys, a devoted fan base and a live action movie in development at Warner Bros. (produced by Tobey Maguire). Now the Robotech saga continues with this upcoming DVD/blu-ray release.
