Animation Scoop Editor Jerry Beck is a writer, animation producer and author of over 15 books on animation history. He is a former studio exec with Nickelodeon Movies and Disney, was instrumental in launching Animation Magazine, co-founded Cartoon Brew and has written for The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. He is on the faculty of Woodbury University in Burbank and his latest book is The Art of Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

My long-time readers know I'm crazy about "retro-style" animation - i.e. new animated films in the style of 20s-30s-40s-50s - heck, even 60s and 70s - cartoon modes. Here's a new crowd funded project that has certainly caught my eye: Fleisch & Cherry in Crazy House.

CTN to open Center Stage Galley in Burbank

The Creative Talent Network - best known as host of The CTN Animation Expo - will be opening a new kind of gallery in Burbank beginning June 13th. In association with Stuart Ng Books and Wacom Technologies, The Center Stage Gallery will be a permanent space to celebrate artists from the feature film, illustration and video industries.

Simply put: are studios creating animated feature films with only an eye to short-term profits at the expense of long-term gains? Where are the films that are genuinely unique in a cultural way and that (intentional or not) are likely to remain popular in the way Snow White has?

Yabba-Dabba Don't! Fred and Barney will soon share the screen with WWE superstars "Vince McMagma" (voiced by Vince McMahon), "John Cenastone" (John Cena) and "CM Punkrock" (CM Punk). Warner Bros. is teaming with WWE Studios to co-produce a Flintstones animated feature film, scheduled for direct-to-video release in early 2015.

TV SPOTLIGHT: The Hub's "SheZow" trailer

Starting next Saturday, The Hub will debut SheZow, a new super hero. Secretly he's a 12-year-old boy named Guy, who uses a magic ring to transform himself into a costumed crime fighter. With three magic words, "You go girl!" Guy becomes SheZow - a kick-ass female super hero! Here's the trailer.

We posted last month about the wild new short film directed by Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game). Here's the official trailer for the film, which was produced through crowd funding via Kickstarter, in collabortion with Japan's Production I.G. It has been selected for competition by France's Annecy Animation Festival in June.

After The Croods, Epic and Turbo, 20th Century-Fox has a fourth animated feature coming out during 2013 - Walking With Dinosaurs The Movie 3D. Directed by Barry Cook (Mulan) with documentary filmmaker Nigel Nightengale, with animation from Australia's Animal Logic (Happy Feet), here's the trailer.

Blu Sky's Epic is a visually stunning film, an amazing leap forward for the Connecticut studio; no previous film by the team has been as technically impressive or imaginatively executed, and this is where author Tara Bennett shines as chronicler.
