A few years ago, there were only a handful of American universities teaching animation production, aesthetics and history. Today it's hard to find a school without a film studies program and animation art classes. Los Angeles has several long-established animation programs at Cal Arts, UCLA, USC, Woodbury University and more recently Loyola Marymount University in Playa Vista. Today, LMU is about to step into the big time.

Dan Krall was a character designer on Coraline and How To Train Your Dragon, and art director for Chowder and Samurai Jack. He's also illustrated several quirky and clever children's books in his time between jobs. His latest, coming out on May 7th, is really really sweet - and a little sour (intentionally)!

Previs for VFX-intensive movies is not only getting more sophisticated but also more graphic as well, further blurring the line between live-action and animation. Check out these clips from The Green Hornet previs, animated in XSI and rendered using the mental ray toon shader.
