Animation Scoop Editor Jerry Beck is a writer, animation producer and author of over 15 books on animation history. He is a former studio exec with Nickelodeon Movies and Disney, was instrumental in launching Animation Magazine, co-founded Cartoon Brew and has written for The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. He is on the faculty of Woodbury University in Burbank and his latest book is The Art of Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

Sony Pictures Animation may not have a feature release this year, but with several films in production and many more in development, the studio has much going on behind-the-scenes. SPA's YouTube site was just revamped and is now uploading new videos, going behind-the-scenes, twice a week.

I've been a follower of Joe Dante's superb website Trailers From Hell from its inception in 2007. The one thing it had been lacking throughout the years was commentary on animated features - however they make up for lost time with this week's double barreled salute to two Ralph Bakshi 1970s classics.

The FMX 2014 conference in Stuttgart on film, games, and transmedia kicked off Tuesday morning with "Advancing Visual Effects in How To Train Your Dragon 2," revealing how both Hiccup and DreamWorks have grown up. Scott Peterson, co-head of VFX at the animation studio, screened the first five minutes (embed here) and offered details of their new high-res simulations.

Although it only lasted in syndication for five years, Richard Thompson’s wonderfully imaginative “Cul de Sac" demonstrated the ongoing viability of the comic strip. Andrews and McMeel is issuing the entire run of the strip in a handsome, boxed set similar to the ones of “The Far Side” and “Calvin and Hobbes,” which feels appropriate.
