Disney fans are well aware of Donald Duck's super wealthy Uncle Scrooge McDuck. Scrooge's  adventures have been well documented through the years by Carl Barks (and others) in the Disney comics, as well as in animation.

In addition to a few short films, such as the 1967 short film Scrooge McDuck and Money (above), an animated Scrooge McDuck also appeared in the very popular Disney cartoon television series DuckTales. The show was so popular that it had its own videogame. Released in 1989 on the Nintendo Entertainment System, the game DuckTales proved to be much more than just a game based on a cartoon.

The game was developed by Capcom, creators of such titles as Mega Man and Final Fight. The gameplay of DuckTales was outstanding from any other game at the time. It included some of the best controls, graphics, and overall presentation on the Nintendo Entertainment System, or any other platform. It is considered by many to be one of the best titles ever available on the NES. The game that was so loved by gamers of the late 80's and early 90's is about to find a whole new audience.

WayForward and Capcom have recently announced that they are releasing an HD remake of DuckTales, titled DuckTalesHD and due to hit stores this summer. The game is basically an asset for asset remastering of the original 1989 game, with high resolution imagery on the characters, backgrounds, and remastered audio, however the game will also feature new levels and boss battles not seen in the 1989 game.

It will be interesting to see how this remake/remastering is received by today's gamers. Could we possibly see a slew of remasters and revamps if it does well? What classic game would YOU like to see get an HD make over?

Hearing the theme makes me wish for a CD of that great Ron Jones score music more than anything. The game looks cool too! :)

The new version will have voice acting. I have read that Alan Young and June Foray have returned to voice their characters (Scrooge and Magica).

(I saw one gameplay video on YouTube and can confirm that there are voices in the game, but the video was shot in a crowded convention with people talking over it so I couldn't tell what the characters were saying or if they were indeed voiced by the original voice actors.)

I use to borrow this game from a buddy of mine, growing up. I loved it as it was. I honestly found the trailer to the "HD" version to be unbearable. As an adult, part of revisiting these games is being an able to revisit them as I played them.

I've played a few HD remakes of other games, and it does seem that some of the charm goes away as the graphics improve. An HD remake where they try to keep the poses and drawings the "same" don't always look the greatest. The pixel based art with a limited palette is very forgiving. Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is a great example of this.
