This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) kicked off today with press conferences and game reveals beginning at 9AM and wrapping up well into the evening. While there was a steady parade of zombies, mercenaries, and post apocalyptic gun play, there were also quite a few surprises - mostly from independent developers.

The biggest visual stand out so far would have to be a game called Cuphead.

Created and developed by Studio MDHR, this game looks and feels like a love letter to the classic Fleischer / Ub Iwerks animated shorts. Cuphead is a single player or co-op run and gun platformer, heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by 1930s cartoons, the visuals are hand drawn and inked and the music is all original jazz recordings. Cuphead & Mugman traverse strange worlds, acquire new weapons, learn powerful super moves, and uncover hidden secrets.

Another title that stood out to me was Ori and the Blind Forest.

Independent developer Moon Studios showed off what looks to be an adventure platformer with a very painterly environment. The game looks beautiful and seems to have some nice animated moments. Ori and the Blind Forest will be available later this year on XBox One.

Sunset Overdrive from Insomniac looks like it is taking the standard stale shooter games and giving them a new stylized goal to reach for. They even poke fun at the status quo in their trailer.

Another animation related announcement came in tonight's Playstation press conference, where it was revealed that the animated feature film based on the very popular Ratchet and Clank games will come to theaters in 2015.

E3 is just getting started, and there are a lot more announcements and surprises planned for the rest of the week. It looks like a great time for video games, especially the independent ones!
