Here's our first glimpse at Sonic Boom, a new series and new look for Sonic the Hedgehog and friends. It's the character's first-ever CG animated television series, and will be accompanied by new video games for Wii U  and Nintendo 3DS - as well as a new toy line.

The Sonic Boom television series, co-produced by SEGA of America Inc. and Paris-based OuiDO! Productions, will debut on Cartoon Network in the U.S. and on CANAL J and GULLI in France during the 2014/2015 season. It will consist of 52  11-minute standalone episodes.

The Sonic Boom TV series is a co-production between SEGA of America, Inc. and OuiDO! Productions.  Executive producers on the show are Evan Baily, Donna Friedman Meir and Jane McGregor on behalf of SEGA, and Sandrine Nguyen and Boris Hertzog from OuiDO!.  Other partners involved in the TV series include Lagardere Entertainment Rights for distribution and Lagardere Active TV Licensing & New Business for licensing and merchandise in France.

What's with the wrist bandages? Come on Sonic, things can't possibly be that bad!

Judging from this, the show appears to be little more than an extended cutscene from a videogame. It would have been interesting to have some of the talent that has worked on this franchise previously (such as Len Janson, Pat Allee, Nigel Kitching or Ken Penders) invovled, although SB appears to be consistent with the long-term pattern of Sega creating a new variant on the same characters, to be used for short time before being dropped in favour of another approach.

They just took the terrible modern Sonic design and made it worse by stretching out his limbs. It's a shame we'll never see anything that rivals those wonderful bits of animation from Sonic CD. Of course those are just a few minutes long with zero dialogue which is really the only way to handle these one-note characters.
