Disney has released this 2 and a half minute compilation of clips from its forthcoming theatrical feature, Planes. And I have to admit, it's looking a bit more "theatrical" (the film was originally made-for-video, produced through Glendale-based Disneytoon Studios).

Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Cedric the Entertainer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese and Carlos Alazraqui give voice to this Cars-inspired adventure which opens August 9th, 2013. Klay Hall directs. Have a look:

If you know how to do squash and stretch for metal in CGI in a way that won't look so jerky , please let me know as I honestly not sure how to do it.

Also, keep in mind this was done not by Pixar but by Disney Toon Studios which has lower budget animation done by outside sources.

Once again, I'm very underwhealmed by the character animation in the "Cars" movies, and now the "Planes" movie exhibits the same faults. Where is the squash and stretch, the changes of shape, the flexibility of expression in these collections of coliginous junk? In the "Cars" movies, the tires and the undercarriages are somewhat flexible, but the actual metal car bodies and cabs have very little pliability. Just look at the original "Pedro" and "Suzie the Little Blue Coupe" cartoons, and see how flexible the handling of the characters was. We've gained in textures and camera movement, but we've lost a lot of character animation.
