The most exciting animation book of 2013? I'd place my bet on a new novel by Ruth Clampett.
Ruth Clampett? "Baby Ruthy"? Daughter of Warner Bros. master animator, creator of Tweety and Beany & Cecil, Bob Clampett? Yep - that Ruth has written a fictional romance story set in the world of animation.
It's called Animate Me and It'll be available May 1st on Amazon.com as both an eBook and a physical soft cover (cover image below). Animation artist Juan Ortiz did the cover drawing and several interior illos (as did Vince Musacchia).
Ruth became encouraged to write a novel after discovering the online fan-fiction community several years ago. She began writing Animate Me slowly, chapter by chapter, for feedback from the romance community. The reaction was so overwhelmingly positive Clampett feels the time is right to present it to the world at large.
Ruth explained to me how this project began to take shape:
"When a friend exposed me to her passion for contemporary romance stories and I started reading, I realized that the creative people I loved best weren't represented in that genre. With that idea in mind, I was incredibly inspired, so my fictional animator, Nathan, and Sketch Republic, the studio he works for, took shape. Animate Me became real in my head and I never stopped writing. I'm thrilled now to share it."
"I think that most people see the world of cartoons & comics as for kids, not realizing the astounding business of talented people behind the work that entertains all of us. My story gives an inside peek into that world. It has the potential to reach a group of readers who may never have had the chance to learn how smart, fun and sexy our cartoon/comic culture can be."
What's it about? Here's the tease copy:
She seemed far beyond his reach... could love draw them together?
For years shy animator
Nathan has carried a torch for Brooke, the beautiful and dynamic Director of
Development at their animation studio, even creating B-Girl, a comic-book
heroine in her likeness. When a new project throws the two of them together,
lovestruck Nathan finally seizes his moment - only to find Arnauld, head of the
animation studio, claiming exclusive rights to Brooke's affections.
But Nathan, it turns out, is not giving up on his dreams so easily. With inspired
determination, he sets out to be the super hero of wooing his girl. Threatened
by his persistence, Arnauld plays dirty - only to spark an uprising at the
studio that unleashes the sort of havoc only a building full of frustrated
animators can create. While Nathan pulls out all the stops to win his B-girl, Brooke has to choose. Should she pursue the sparkling career that has taken her years to build... or follow her heart?
A trailer (featuring animation) is in the works - and we'll be posting that, a link to the book and a full review when it becomes available next month.
