Two of the summer’s best-selling anime series are both violent and difficult to categorize. Based on a manga series by Hajime Isayama, "Attack on Titan" has scored a huge hit in Japan. "Date Alive", has been described as a spoof of otaku (anime fan) culture. Here's my reviews.

Here's a spectacular looking promo (in Japanese) for Yasuomi Umetsu's Wizard Barristers, which premieres on Tokyo MX on January 12th, and will also air on Sun TV, KBS Kyoto, TV Aichi, AT-X, and BS11. The animation was produced by Tokyo's Arms Corporation.

Short Peace is a spectacular new four-part anime anthology feature which opened theatrically in Tokyo in July. This film should have gotten a US theatrical release, but here's the latest trailer to publicize its Japanese DVD/blu-ray release on January 16th 2014.

The Rose of Versailles makes American daytime soap operas feel restrained, but it scored an enormous hit in Japan. More than 15 million books of the manga have been sold world-wide. Right Stuff has just released the complete anime series on two-four disc sets - and here is my review.

Warner Archives revives "Marine Boy"

Alongside Astro Boy, Giagantor, Eighth Man, Prince Planet, Speed Racer and Kimba: The White Lion, MARINE BOY was one of the pioneering handful of anime television series to be syndicated to the U.S. in the 1960s. Warner Archives has just announced that it is releasing the first 26 (of 78) episodes, newly restored, on DVD.

Gatchaman is best known in the US as the anime series Battle of the Planets or G-Force. But the property was created in 1972 for animation studio Tatsunko Productions. Toho is releasing a new live action film based on the characters on August 24th. Based on the trailer released today, this looks surprisingly good!

ANIME DVD UPDATE: Robotech 2-Movie Collection

The 1985 syndicated series Robotech lives on today with sequels, prequels, comic books, toys, a devoted fan base and a live action movie in development at Warner Bros. (produced by Tobey Maguire). Now the Robotech saga continues with this upcoming DVD/blu-ray release.
