Like an obnoxious relative at a family gathering, Rio 2 grabs you by the arm and insists you’re having fun, even when you both know you’re not. In this follow-up to Blue Sky’s Rio (2011), the filmmakers keep trying to generate energy and excitement, but the rambling story, needless songs and overly familiar characters undercut their efforts.

During a time when most studios were promoting their films with coffee table art books, BlueSky was rather quiet. Not until now did Rio, released in 2011, get "The Art of" treatment. Author Tara Bennett has packaged material from that film along with an advance look at Rio 2, and the result is a sumptuous, if crowded, compendium.

The teaser trailer from Blue Sky's eagerly anticipated Charlie Brown 3D CG "Peanuts" feature film has been released. From the look of it, the producers have made a wise move, keeping it as faithful to Schulz art as the fans expect. I'm jazzed!

I caught up with Chris Wedge again when he was in town recently to revisit the underrated Epic, his most personal film and one of my favorites of the year. The lush swashbuckler has a heartfelt father/daughter story and looks beneath the surface in discovering hidden truths about life and nature. We also looked forward to his first live-action feature, Monster Trucks (May 29, 2015).

Second in a series of teaser trailers for the Fox-Blue Sky Spring 2014 release, Rio 2, can be summed up in a word: cute.

Blu Sky's Epic is a visually stunning film, an amazing leap forward for the Connecticut studio; no previous film by the team has been as technically impressive or imaginatively executed, and this is where author Tara Bennett shines as chronicler.

It's not a disaster or an embarrassment like Hoodwinked or Barnyard, but given the experience and abilities of Chris Wedge and Blue Sky artists, it should be better.
