I caught up with Chris Wedge again when he was in town recently to revisit the underrated Epic, his most personal film and one of my favorites of the year. The lush swashbuckler has a heartfelt father/daughter story and looks beneath the surface in discovering hidden truths about life and nature. We also looked forward to his first live-action feature, Monster Trucks (May 29, 2015).

It's not a disaster or an embarrassment like Hoodwinked or Barnyard, but given the experience and abilities of Chris Wedge and Blue Sky artists, it should be better.

Epic is not only Blue Sky's best movie but also director Chris Wedge's most personal, too: a swashbuckling, samurai action/adventure that takes place in a lush, microscopic forest world. It's familiar and new; naturalistic and fantastical. And it's about looking beneath the surface and discovering hidden truths about life and nature.
