The two most interesting nominees this year for the Animated Short Oscar embody a division that has characterized animation for at least a century. Indeed, Green was mentored by Goldberg during this unique production that brilliantly encapsulates the history of Mickey and Disney.

Although he wrote them in 1859, Charles Dickens might have been thinking of the animation scene this past year when he penned the celebrated lines, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times". Looking over a year that seemed to seesaw between Light and Darkness, I’d like to present some awards for the best and worst of 2013.

In honor of Mickey's 85th birthday today, I go deeper into Disney's "Get A Horse!" hybrid short with Eric Goldberg -- who served as the 2D supervisor and made the blueprint for staying true to the 1928 model -- and with a clip of the first minute of the film.
