I recently chatted with the Oscar nominees for The Croods (directors Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco), Despicable Me 2 (Chris Renaud), Ernest & Celestine (Benjamin Renner), Frozen (Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee), and The Wind Rises (producer Toshio Suzuki). We discussed what makes their work personal, challenging, and relatable.

Although he wrote them in 1859, Charles Dickens might have been thinking of the animation scene this past year when he penned the celebrated lines, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times". Looking over a year that seemed to seesaw between Light and Darkness, I’d like to present some awards for the best and worst of 2013.

Despite the overwhelming presence (as well as audience and critical reception) of such Hollywood front runners as Disney's Frozen and Dreamworks' The Croods, a pair of foreign films have begun nabbing year end critics awards as the years best.

The Wind Rises is Miyazaki's final feature and initial critical and public reaction has been positive - VERY positive. The buzz has begun and the picture is being groomed for Oscars, Annies and Golden Globes. Here's a first look at its official US trailer.

Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises" Opening Nov. 8th for Oscar Qualifying Run

Master animator Hayao Miyazaki's final feature film, The Wind Rises, will be released in the United States this year via Touchstone Pictures. The film will open on November 8th for a one week award Oscar qualifying run at the Landmark Theater on Pico in West Los Angeles.

Here's the first glimpse, via a 35-sec teaser, for the latest Hayao Miyazaki feature, The Wind Rises. The film tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi, the designer of the infamous Japanese Zero Fighters used in World War II. The Wind Rises opens in Japan on July 20th, no U.S. release has been set - yet.
