Rio 2096, A Story of Love and Fury, the 2D animated feature about the love between an immortal hero and a woman he has been in love with for 600 years, won the Best Feature award this weekend at the Annecy International Animation Festival

Director Luiz Bolognesi tells the story in four periods of Brazil's history, culminating in the future, 2096, in the midst of a war for water. The film opened in Brazil in April. No U.S. distribution has been set - yet. Here's the trailer:

^ Definitely looks a little like "Cloud Atlas" but also like "The Fountain." The trope of a single soul living through many lives is not new - although I do not recall an animated film that has tackled this topic. I am quite excited to see this film some day.

A lot of fresh animated features are coming out lately with some wonderfully mature themes that don't include sex and gore.
