Errol Morris Joins the Anti-Bush Doc Crusade!

errlcam.jpg

If Michael Moore weren't enough, docu-auteur Errol Morris (who recently won an Oscar for The Fog of War) has now joined in the crusade to unseat the fanatics in the current White House. Morris has enlisted with the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org to produce a series of political ads for the MoveOn PAC, "featuring authentic American voices committed to change," according to an email I received from MoveOn PAC. The ads will begin airing during the Democratic Convention.

The organization is currently looking to cast regular American folk to appear in the commercials. On MoveOn PAC's website, Morris states, without any of his trademark irony, "Who better to express the current concern with the direction in which America is going? Who better to express the dreams and aspirations of Americans? Who better to express their hopes for change?" He continues, "Many of us have very strong feelings and beliefs about what has happened in the last four years in our country. But there is also a growing concern with what could happen in the next four years. Is this country heading in the right direction? What is our vision of America? Is it being realized?"

I believe Moore's answer would be, quite frankly, no. As he told a crowd of hundreds at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival, fearful for the world's impending doom, "We're fucked." I guess such language isn't "correct" for a broad-based populist appeal to anti-Bushies everywhere, but it certainly gets the point across.

What's next? Frederick Wiseman's ABU GHRAIB? Barbara Kopple's Washington DC, USA, DA Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus's The War Room? Documentary filmmakers everywhere, it is time to join the fight!
