There's something comforting in the fact that "Y Tu Mama Tambien" stars Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna maintain their relationship offscreen -- that somehow fictional characters can spawn real-life partnerships. The two have their own production company, and the LA Times reported yesterday that the two Mexican hearthrobs are launching a documentary film series titled "Ambulante" in 15 cities across Mexico, starting April 6.

The films include Mexican docs "Toro Negro," "Trópico de Cáncer," "Niños de la Calle," and U.S. co-production "La Sierra" and North American films "The Corporation" and "Farmingville," among others. Part of the proceeds from the tour, according to the Times, will be used to help finance more documentary work in Mexico. It's nice to know after fame and fortune these guys still have a social conscience. And it's a good idea. Though docs have broken through in the U.S. marketplace, a lot of worthy American docs were lost in the theatrical glut. A roving documentary fest across the U.S. might be just the thing to raise awareness for important social issues and give important nonfiction films a viable launching pad.
