IFC Entertainment announced today that Victor Nunez’s long in limbo feature Coastlines would be released as part of its new day and date distribution banner, IFC First Take, this May. Way back in 2001, I interviewed Florida's favorite indie filmmaker (Ruby in Paradise, Ulee's Gold) after the film had just wrapped shooting.

"It's important for independent filmmakers to realize that you're not trying to reach the kinds of audiences that Hollywood has to reach," he said. "You're about something else." Unfortunately, look what Nunez's humble, personal ethos has given him: A labor-of-love that has sat on the shelf since its Sundance 2002 premiere, despite industry goodwill and some positive reviews. At Sundance, indieWIRE critic Andy Bailey wrote, "Coastlines delivers another seamless fusion of character, place and story, enriched by Nunez's defiantly simplistic brand of quiet, nuanced filmmaking." It's about time audiences get a chance to see it.
