David Lynch's DV Experiment, Daily Weather Bulletins and "Inland Empire"

David Lynchophiles -- and I'd consider myself among them -- will be happy to hear that his latest feature "Inland Empire" is heading to the Venice Film Festival this fall, according to Variety. But for now, the American surrealist is offering a strange six-minute clip available on YouTube ("David Lynch experimenting with Digital Video") and daily weather forecasts on his web page ("Here in L.A., blue skies, golden sunshine, a gentle cooling breeze, 68 degrees Fahrenheit, 20 Celsius"). It's hard to confirm whether the short was actually made by David Lynch, but it's weird enough to be true. Apparently, the clip may be related to Lynch's internet series Axxon N. or Inland Empire, but I've been unable to confirm anything. Do you think it's real?

Back on his webpage, he is also fielding interesting questions such as the most recent, "Do you think all high rise buildings should be condemned?"

Along with ringtones and wallpaper, highlighted last week by Movie City Indie, Lynch's website also hosts his animated series "Dumbland" and other oddities -- for a $10 per month subscription fee. I haven't been able to gauge whether there is any new material or gather any further clues about Inland Empire, but a May 2005 Variety story quoted Lynch as saying that the DV feature was "about a woman in trouble, and it's a mystery." The film stars Laura Dern, Justin Theroux, Harry Dean Stanton, Jeremy Irons and several Polish actors who hail from the country where much of the film was shot.

"I'm writing as I go," Lynch told Variety last year. "I believe in the unity of things. When you have one part, and then a second part that doesn't relate to that first part, it's very curious to find that they do relate after all. It's a most beautiful thing."

Anthony, the clip is indeed by Lynch. It's off of an Avid promotional DVD called "Room to Dream: David Lynch and the Independent Filmmaker." It also includes interesting "behind the scenes" footage of the making of the clip, but gives no clue if it's from "Inland Empire" or something else. Dear Anthony,
Have always loved David's stuff (Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Lost Highway are my favorites). Didn't know he had a website, but will now hunt it down. I recently completed my own "lynch" (pardon the pun) movie which you can learn about at the url you asked for. You might find it interesting.
