Day-and-Date: Curse or Blessing for Indies?
We're nearly a year out from the first day-and-date release, Steven Soderbergh's "Bubble," which saw the film simultaneously put out in theaters, on cable and DVD. A number of other films have followed a similar path, whether through HDNet Films' initiatives or IFC FIlms' First Take program. In the fall issue of Filmmaker Magazine, I delved into the day-and-date debate to see how well the system is serving filmmakers. "Is the strategy a savior for independent filmmakers, the only way out of the impossibly competitive theatrical marketplace, or a curse, further undermining indies’ potential to perform?" It may still be too soon to tell, but Alex Steyermark, director of HDNet’s "One Last Thing"“ makes some compelling arguments against the plan, while Caveh Zahedi, director of the First Take release "I Am A Sex Addict" has bought into the program -- even though, as of the time of the article's writing, he hadn't seen any money yet from IFC.
