Despite the Sundance Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the $4 million acquisition price paid by Paramount, "Like Crazy" is lame. Time will tell on this one, I assure you. Even though on my flight back from Sundance, an esteemed critic from a major magazine told me she was taken by the film and trade reviews from Variety and The Hollywood Reporter praised it, I'm sticking to my guns and my initial impressions: the movie is shallow and the characterizations are as thin as the actors. Rarely, am I so sure about my critical opinion of a movie. But this time, I have few doubts. Riddled with cliches and boring as a brick, I am completely shocked that it has received the attention it has. As for the jury prize, I can only blame a group of jurors with middle-of-the-road tastes. As for Paramount, well, the studio has a sister subsidiary in MTV, so the purchase may pan out for them.

"At one point in the film, Anne’s British magazine editor asks her to write for the magazine to give the publication a fresh young voice. “I don’t feel very young,” says Anne. “Well, you are,” responds the editor. The conversation is instructive, for Crazy Love may not want to be perceived as naïve, but it is. In all fairness, the film’s final shot reveals a more mature understanding of its story. But by then, it’s too little, too late."
