Unlike some of my fellow journos, I don't have time to see 5 or even 6 movies a day, so I try to pick wisely. This year, so far, in terms of narrative films, I can recommend "Sunshine Cleaning" (read my indieWIRE review here) and "Ballast" (beautifully made, review is forthcoming), and among the docs, "Secrecy" (very Errol Morris, intelligent and artful) and "Bigger, Stronger, Faster" (not the muckraking expose of steroids I'd suspected, but in fact, it's more complex: "steroids are not the problem," says the filmmaker, who actually dispels some myths about its dangers, "they are the side effect"--of an American culture addicted to pharmaceutical enhancements of all kinds).
