With Craig Zobel's shocker "Compliance" reigniting debate this week on the eve of its limited theatrical opening (it was met with wildly passionate reactions at Sundance earlier this year, as well), the writer-director is all the rage right now. Several critics have even likened him to Lars von Trier and Michael Haneke -- auteurs with the urge to provoke. Now Variety is reporting that his next film will star none other than the original Spider-Man himself, Tobey Maguire, who's also on board to produce the project. READ MORE: Why Every Screening of 'Compliance' Should Be Followed By a Q&A Session Titled "Z for Zachariah," the film is a post-apocalyptic drama based on the 1975 novel by Robert C. O'Brien (also the author of the source material for "The Secret of NIMH"). According to Variety, the script "follows a teenage girl who lives alone and maintains a farm in the only valley with breathable air in the wake of nuclear war." Maguire is set to play a scientist whom the girl nurses back to health. Since donning the Spidey outfit for the last time in the 2007 sequel "Spider-Man 3," Maguire has kept a relatively low profile, producing ("Country Strong," "Rock of Ages") and appearing in two indies -- "Brothers," and the 2011 Sundance drama "The Details," which finally opens in September via The Weinstein Company. His biggest project to date post-Spidey, Baz Luhrmann's 3D period extravaganza "The Great Gatsby," won't be seen until next summer, since Warner Bros. scrapped the original Christmas release date. He also has Jason Reitman's adaptation of the Joyce Maynard novel "Labor Day" in production at Paramount. Magnolia opens "Compliance" in select theaters this Friday.
