Having its world premiere this past weekend at the Provincetown Film Festival, Hernando Bansuelo's debut feature "A Reunion" will surely be making its way 'round the festival circuit in the coming weeks. A micro-budgeted and partly improvised road movie, the film follows Michael (Michael Lovan) and Josh (Josh Watson), close friends from college who reunite years after what was clearly a complicated relationship fizzled out. Michael now lives in Japan, and flies in to Los Angeles to meet Josh and embark on a good ol' fashioned road trip to Chicago. What results is a film that's surprising and thoughtful and occasionally quite stirring, and one that certainly rises above standard gay romance fare. It also promises good things from Bansuelo and his co-conspirators (Lovan and Watson co-wrote the screenplay with Bansuelo, and the whole thing feels like a clear joint effort).
