It Wasn't The Gayest Emmys Ever After All

The Normal Heart 4

While "The Normal Heart" did end up winning best TV movie, expectations that tonight might be the "gayest" Emmys fell flat. The entire cast of "The Normal Heart" was shut out (even in best supporting actor, where they made up 4 of the nominees), and the movie also lost both writing and directing honors for Larry Kramer and Ryan Murphy.  "Orange is The New Black" also got shut out of every category it was up for tonight, including best comedy series and best comedy directing (for none other than Jodie Foster for an episode of the show called "Lesbian Request Denied").  Andre Braugher, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Taylor Schilling and Kate McKinnon also lost….

The only really "gay" things about the evening -- beyond "Heart"'s sole win -- were big wins for "Modern Family" and out actor Jim Parsons, but that's hardly enough to be excited about -- and that surely fails in comparison to years when "Angels in America" or "And The Band Played On" or "Will & Grace" dominated.
