Madonna To Direct Third Film With Sex, Religion, Race and Lesbianism All Figuring In

By /bent | /Bent March 25, 2014 at 1:30PM

Wow, Madonna, leave no representational stone unturned! It'll be like your "Like a Prayer" video meets your Sex book meets your relationship with Sandra Bernhard. Which, hey, still sounds like it could be a fun time at the movies.

Hey, "W.E." fan, you ready for some good news!?  Madonna will be directing another feature film, an adaptation of Rebecca Walker's "Ade: A Love Story."

Walker's book, which was published just last October, is described as the following on Amazon:

In this stunning debut novel, Rebecca Walker turns her attention to the power of love and the limitations of the human heart. When Farida, a sophisticated college student, falls in love with Adé, a young Swahili man living on an idyllic island off the coast of Kenya, the two plan to marry and envision a simple life together — free of worldly possessions and concerns. But when Farida contracts malaria and finds herself caught in the middle of a civil war, reality crashes in around them. The lovers’ solitude is interrupted by a world in the throes of massive upheaval that threatens to tear them apart, along with all they cherish. Haunting, exquisite, and certain to become a classic, Adé will stay with you long after you put it down. This is a timeless love story set perfectly, heartbreakingly, in our time.

Seems like a cinematic enough story, and the good news is that film will be produced by Bruce Cohen, which certainly bodes well if his past resume including "American Beauty," "Milk" and "Silver Linings Playbook" has anything to say about.

The bad news, other than Madonna's own directorial past (though to be totally honest we did find some redeemable qualities in "W.E.," plus it helped launch the career of our future husband Oscar Isaac!), is this suggestion from The Hollywood Reporter article about the film:

Although very much a love story, many of the themes and subjects in Ade are those Madonna has touched upon in envelope-pushing ways at the height of her music career. Sex, religion, race, lesbianism all figure into the story one way or another.

Wow, Madonna, leave no representational stone unturned! It'll be like your "Like a Prayer" video meets your Sex book meets your relationship with Sandra Bernhard.  Which, hey, still sounds like it could be a fun time at the movies, just perhaps not in the way you intended.

For the hell of it, feel free to wait out the first 12 1/2 minutes between now and the release of "Ade: A Love Story" with this audio clip of /bent's Peter Knegt interviewing Madonna for "W.E.":
