'Orange is the New Black' Star Reveals How She Got Her Revenge on Fred Phelps

Lea DeLaria reminds us why she's a star we're delighted has finally broken into the mainstream

Lea DeLaria

Lea DeLaria is one of those celebrities whose presence in mainstream entertainment is all the more appealing for the fact that she quite clearly never sought it. Vocally proud to represent butch lesbians on "Orange is the New Black", she preceded this breakout role with many years of performance combined with activism, famously dubbing herself "That Fucking Dyke" in her career in stand-up comedy.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, DeLaria has revealed how one of her proudest moments was getting Fred Phelps thrown out of New York Pride back in the 1990s. DeLaria claims she got Phelps so enraged, "he literally tried to cross the police line to hit me". Thankfully, the police were having none of it.

The full interview can be seen in the link above, which is a refreshing reminder of how good a job "Orange is the New Black" has done in bringing genuinely diverse voices and characters to mainstream viewers (you might be aware that this blog is rather fond of Laverne Cox too). Next challenge? A bit more diversity in the show's depiction of lesbian sex, which has leaned heavily on its white, slim and feminine actors when it comes to actually depicting the act.

If anyone's up for bucking that trend, it's surely DeLaria.
