Deadline is reporting that Steve Carell is replacing Zach Galifianakis in "Freeheld," the Peter Sollett-directed film based on the Oscar winning documentary short that details the domestic partnership battle fought by lesbian couple Laurel Hester (played by Julianne Moore) and Stacie Ardeen (played by Ellen Page). Hester and Ardeen fought to amend the Domestic Partnership Act, which grants pension benefits to domestic partners of all New Jersey public employees, when Ardeen was denied the pension benefits of her Hester when the latter became terminally ill.

The film is produced by Kelly Bush, Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher, James D. Stern, Richard Fischoff, Duncan Montgomery, Jack Selby, Scott G. Stone and Cynthia Wade (the latter of whom directed the Oscar-winning doc). Ron Nyswaner -- who wrote "Philadelphia," no less -- wrote the script.
