Well it could be a battle for yearly supremacy after all. "Amazing Spider-Man 2" swung out of the gate with an impressive $36 million Friday and a three day total in the $92-95 range, which would land it on the same launching pad as "Captain America: Winter Soldier", which opened to $95 million and remains the highest opening three day stanza of the year. "AMS2" came in with an overall B+ Cinemascore (A- with those under 25) and the key for the three day total should be how well it plays to a family audience today and tomorrow. As it almost always does on these kind of superhero movies, the Imax houses fared very well, yet the 3D screens were less than impressive.
Elsewhere, the rest of the top five came in as I predicted yesterday with "The Other Woman" in the #2 spot ($15 million), "Heaven Is For Real" slipping into the third spot ($8.6 million) and "Captain America: Winter Soldier" and "Rio 2" vying for the fourth spot (8.0 million).
