MINDLESS WANDERINGS (...Or Stuff That Happened While You Were At "Cabaret" With Shia LaBeouf)

***Is this the start of a comeback?  It was announced that Mel Gibson will receive the Lifetime Achievement award at the upcoming Karlovy Film Festival in the Czech Republic

***Shane Black, the director of "Iron Man 3" and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", will write the screenplay for and direct both Fox's upcoming "Predator" reboot as well as Sony's "Doc Savage" adaptation.  Black is said to want "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth in the title role as the good doctor

***Eli Wallach, the star of such classics as "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" and "The Magnificent Seven" died last week at his home in New York.  He was 98

***Ben Kingsley will voice the role of Bagheera the Panther in BV's "The Jungle Book".  Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson and Lupita Nyong'o are also attached to Jon Favreau's stab at the Rudyard Kipling tale.  The film opens October 9, 2015.

***The last time Casey Affleck was in the director's chair it resulted in the bizarre "I'm Still Here", which followed a confused and meandering pre-"Her" Joaquin Phoenix.  This time out it should be a bit more sublime as he will helm the presently untitled story of Los Angeles Angels outfield Josh Hamilton, who went from drug addiction nearly ruining his baseball career to a fresh start both on the field and off.  Relativity will distribute the film.

***Focus and Blumhouse have found their star for "Insidious 3" and its Dermot Mulroney most recently seen on TV's "Crisis" and on the big screen in "August: Osage County"

***The sale of Joe Roth's Revolution Studios has finally become official.  The studio, which Roth started in 2000 and currently holds rights to 50 titles, recently sold to Fortress Investment Group. Roth will take on a small role with the company as an advisor.

***"Shawshank Redemption" and "The Walking Dead"'s Frank Darabont will take over directing chores for "Snow White and the Huntsman 2".  The aforementioned Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart starred in the original and are expected back for the sequel.

*** Congratulations to studio execs Kyle Davies, Dave Hollis, Nick Carpou and Adrian Alperovich on their invitations to become AMPAS members last week.

*** "Tammy" pie trucks rolled out this past weekend in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, which is terrific advertising for the film which comes out Wednesday.
