Who's going to be the first film industry website to start betting against the faith based film juggernaut we are currently in the midst of in this country? Well, it certainly isn't going to be mine, especially with the cast and director responsible for Sony/Tri-Star's "Heaven Is For Real". With a prime release date that encompasses both Good Friday and Easter, the film has the potential to be a major player at the box office this weekend.
The film revolves around the true story of Colton Burpo, who claims that he saw heaven while undergoing surgery. His father, played by Greg Kinnear, must somehow find the courage to share his son's extraordinary experience with the world. In addition to Kinnear, the film stars Kelly Reilly, Connor Corum, Margo Martindale ("August: Osage County"), and Thomas Hayden Church and is directed by Randall Wallace ("Secretariat", "We Were Soldiers").
Grassroots and social media buzz is through the roof on this film and the incredible success of "God's Not Dead" (see earlier article on this site on that film's marketing genius, Ash Greyson), "Son Of God" and yes, even "Noah", have acclimatized faith based audiences into understanding that they can indeed return to their local multiplexes.
Oh and finally, the 20 minute featurette on the real life Colton Burpo has 18 million, yes 18 million, YouTube views.
