Can 'Sin City' Unseat TMNT and 'Guardians'? Can a Football Movie NOT Set in the South Work? This Week's Previews & Predictions...

Frank Miller's "Sin City" Chronicles return after a nine year big screen absence to hopefully prove that R rated action movies work better than watered-down PG-13's do, Sony hopes "When The Game Stands Tall" recalls the glory of "Friday Night Lights" and "Remember The Titans" and Chloe Grace Moretz headlines "If I Stay" for Warners.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR---WEINSTEIN---WIDE---3D---102 MINS---R
When we look at the possible explanations for the disappointing opening of "Expendables 3" this past weekend, one of the glaring red flags certainly will be the PG-13 rating.  Whatever under-17 audience they thought they'd get with that rating (and there were a few tweens and teens in the auditorium I saw the film in on Saturday night) was more than offset by the R rated action crowd looking elsewhere.  And possibly their attention turns to this week's "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For", Frank Miller's (with help from Robert Rodriguez) slaughter-palooza with Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis and Rosario Dawson reprising their roles from the 2005 original and along for the ride this time out are Eva Green, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Josh Brolin.  Online buzz is middling (other than deep, insightful comments like "Jessica Alba is so hot!") but "Lucy" proved that the R rated action crowd is out there in the summer and there shouldn't be another film landing north of $20 million this weekend.  The 2005 original opened to $29 million but that just doesn't feel attainable this time out.

If I Stay

IF I STAY---WARNER BROTHERS---WIDE---106 MINS---PG-13
Young adult novel adaptation #486 of the year features Chloe Grace Moretz (who I believe has been in 75% of the films released in 2014, if I'm not mistaken) as a comatose girl whose out-of-body experience causes her to question her life's path.  Jamie Blackley (TV's "Endeavour", "The Fifth Estate") co-stars as Moretz's love interest.  The film has bounced around since 2010 with a number of actresses (Dakota Fanning, Emily Browning) and directors (Catherine Hardwicke, Heitor Dahlia) attached to the project at one point or another, which is never a good sign.  Social media buzz is high, but exclusively for a young female audience.

JIM'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION: $14 MILLION

CAST: Chloe Grace Moretz, Mireille Enos, Jamie Blackley, Stacy Keach
DIRECTOR: R. J. Cutler

When The Game Stands Tall

WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL---SONY/TRI-STAR---WIDE---115 MINS---PG
Jim Caviezel portrays legendary De La Salle High School coach Bob Ladouceur, who led his team to a still-standing record of 151 consecutive victories between 1992-2003.  Football movies can catch fire, as witnessed by "Friday Night Lights", "The Blind Side" and "Remember The Titans" to name a few, but there are three things to keep in mind here.  First, those movies were released during football season (September, November and October respectively).  Secondly, and possibly more important, those films dealt with southern football, where the sport is more than a game but a way of life. And lastly, all of the aforementioned titles had a compelling side story.  The winning streak that is the cornerstone for "When The Game Stands Tall" is astonishing from a sports records point of view but can marketing find a hook that will convince audiences this is a must-see?

JIM'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE PREDICTION:  $10 MILLION

CAST:  Jim Caviezel, Michael Chiklis, Laura Dern, Clancy Brown, Alexander Ludwig
DIRECTOR: Thomas Carter
THURSDAY NIGHT LATE SHOWS: 7:00 PM
