There's nothing like an opening in China to move a film back up the box office standings. Languishing "How To Train Your Dragon 2" got a Beijing Boost this weekend, pulling in almost $26 million from that country, allowing the film to take the #1 spot on the International Box Office charts. "Expendables 3" was far less lucky.

There's nothing like an opening in China to move a film back up the box office standings.  Languishing "How To Train Your Dragon 2" got a Beijing Boost this weekend, pulling in almost $26 million from that country, allowing the film to take the #1 spot on the International Box Office charts.  The weekend brings the film's overall cume to $537 million, 68% of which has come from overseas audiences, which as we all know love animation.  Second position went to "Guardians of the Galaxy", not far behind with $33.1 million.  "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and "Lucy", finally getting its wider international release, fill out the top five.  It wasn't such a remarkable debut for "Expendables 3" as the film's initial two markets (including normally action film friendly Russia) accounted for only $5.5 million.  The film has a long way to go to start making back its $95 million negative cost.

Note, I'm waiting for the weekend totals on the UK's "The In-Betweeners 2".  The film grossed $18 million in its first weekend and will surely land in the top 10 again this week.
