SUNDAY UPDATE Cowabunga!: "Ninja Turtles" Rock To $65 Million Weekend As The Late Summer Hits Just Keep On Coming

Box Office Insider By Jim Amos | Box Office Insider August 9, 2014 at 11:57AM

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is the latest entry in the late summer hit parade as the reptiles debuted with an astonishing $65 million, easily distancing themselves from "Guardians of the Galaxy", which fell 56% to an estimated $41.4 million

UPDATED SUNDAY ESTIMATES
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" pull (yet another) late summer surprise, amassing a terrific debut of $65 million this weekend.  The film found solid footing with a family crowd (one that admittedly I was skeptical they would get) and also played well late nights.  I'm wondering if moviegoers "medicated" themselves for the late shows.  Check if the grosses for the 9:30 PM shows were big in Colorado and Washington, for example.  A B Cinemascore means that long term prospects for Megan Fox and crew are somewhat suspect but when you're coming from this high of an opening does it really matter.  Oh and by the way, please be seated for this startling piece of information.....a sequel is now being planned.  Remain calm, citizens.

Elsewhere, "Guardians of the Galaxy" took the brunt of the Turtles hit, dropping an estimated 56% for the weekend which translates into $41.5 million, still a great second week number.

The other openings included Warner Brothers' "Into The Storm" which played well in the middle of the country and should top off at $18.0 million this weekend.  The film received a B Cinemascore.  "The Hundred Foot Journey" nabbed an A Cinemascore and an $11.1 million take for the weekend, placing it fourth.  As predicted, "Step Up: All In" was a bit all out and will only manage $6.6 million which is good for only sixth place.

Finally, that whoosh! you hear is "Get On Up" descending the top 10.  The James Brown biopic fell a disastrous 63% this weekend.
