Although it's not in the stratosphere of early summer tentpole superhero titles, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" opened to a respectable, though hardly overwhelming, $4 million in its Thursday night late shows last night.

Although it's not in the stratosphere of early summer tentpole superhero titles, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" opened to a respectable $4 million in its Thursday night late shows last night.  The main thing to keep in mind is that although that total places it only 9th for pre-opening evening shows this summer, "Apes" Thursday night shows commenced at 10:00 PM rather than starts of 8:00 PM or even 7:00 PM that other films this summer began their run with. Tracking is still placing the film at around the $60+ million level for the weekend (I predicted $63 on Monday and I'll stick with that).
