'Expendables 3' Off To Middling Start w/$875,000 From Thursday Late Shows, 'Giver' Also Underwhelming

Box Office Insider By Jim Amos | Box Office Insider August 15, 2014 at 12:12PM

Perhaps the 7pm late shows last night were past most of the stars', and therefore their fans', bedtimes but "Expendables 3" limped to a late show gross of only $875,000, barely topping Weinstein's "The Giver" and falling short of "Let's Be Cops" late shows of $1.2 million on Tuesday night.

Perhaps the 7pm late shows last night were past most of the stars', and therefore their fans', bedtimes but "Expendables 3" limped to a late show gross of only $875,000, barely topping Weinstein's "The Giver" and falling short of "Let's Be Cops" late shows of $1.2 million on Tuesday night (and those were at 10pm, not the 7pm for Sly & Co.).

Most outlets have the picture taking the #2 slot after 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' but logically it could fall anywhere between #'s 2-4.  My projections of yesterday had it landing at $23 million, just behind 'Guardians of the Galaxy" and just ahead of 'Let's Be Cops' and I've seen nothing this week that would provide me the impetus to change that.  If anything I'm now thinking that having a gross with a "2" in front of it for the weekend might be optimistic.

In any case, this should be a fun weekend to watch the grosses come in.  Just to refresh everyone's memory, here are the Box Office Insider projections for the weekend Top 10

1)   TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES---$28.8 MILLION
2)   GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY---$23.1 MILLION
3)   THE EXPENDABLES 3---$23.01 MILLION
4)   LET'S BE COPS---$23.00 MILLION
5)   THE GIVER---$17.5 MILLION
6)   THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY---$7.8 MILLION
7)   INTO THE STORM---$7.2 MILLION
8)   LUCY---$5.1 MILLION
9)   HERCULES---$3.0 MILLION
10) STEP UP: ALL IN---$2.8 MILLION
