Fox Extends Market Share Lead As "Guardians"-Led Disney Makes A Charge

Fox continues to enjoy its 2014 Market Share advantage but the battle is to see who finishes summer in second place as current place-holder Warners starts to hear those raccoon-fueled Disney footsteps.

Fox

Thanks to Apes, X-Men and animation, Fox sits comfortably atop the 2014 Market Share pedestal, passing the $1 billion mark a few weeks back.  They currently have a cushy $160 million lead over Warners, which has been fueled by those LEGO figures and a big green lizard.  But the gang in Burbank have to be looking over their shoulder as that galloping they hear is Rocket Raccoon and the "Guardians of the Galaxy" heroes, who have moved Disney into third place and only $27 million back of second.  If all goes according to plan, BV should move into second position by later this week and will attempt to hold Warners off as they open "The Hundred-Foot Journey" this week while WB debuts both "Into the Storm" and "If I Fell" before summer finishes.  Both companies will hit $1 billion by this coming weekend.

Warner Brothers

Here's how things sit as of last night, along with August openings for all companies.

2014 STUDIO MARKET SHARE
(Thru August 3)
1)   FOX---$1.157 BILLION
"Let's Be Cops" still to open before summer finishes
2)   WARNER BROTHERS---$997 MILLION

Disney

3)   BUENA VISTA---$970 MILLION
"The Hundred-Foot Journey" opens Friday.  Will pass $1 billion later this week.
4)   SONY---$919 MILLION
"When the Game Stands Tall" debuts August 22.  They'll have to wait until September to hit the $1 billion mark
5)   UNIVERSAL---$738 MILLION
"As Above, So Below" opens August 29.   No $1 billion until "Dumb and Dumber To"
6)   PARAMOUNT---$615 MILLION
"Ninja Turtles" this Friday will give them a boost.  No chance of hitting $1 billion with only two wide titles (PN Activity 5" and an Xmas debut of "Hot Tub Time Machine 2") to go in 2014
7)   LIONSGATE---$300 MILLION
"Expendables 3" and "Step Up: All In" still to go in August
8)   OPEN ROAD---$123 MILLION
No further August releases
9)   RELATIVITY---$117 MILLION
Pierce Brosnan's "Relativity Man" still to come in August
10) WEINSTEIN---$90 MILLION
They are currently in a virtual tie with Fox Searchlight but TWC should have a big August with "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For" and "The Giver"
