Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel and crew prove they're not only "Guardians of the Galaxy" but also saviors of the summer. The Marvel/Disney tentpole pulls a late summer box office shocker with a $94 million weekend, setting an August box office record.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel and crew prove they're not only "Guardians of the Galaxy" but also Saviors of the Summer.  The Marvel/Disney tentpole wowed auds this weekend with $94 million, including $11.7 million from its 354 Imax screens) setting a new high water mark for an August opener, obliterating the previous $69 million debut of "The Bourne Identity".   In addition the film scored a robust A Cinemascore and 91 Rotten Tomatoes score. Hats off to the companies' marketing and publicity departments as they made the movie look like 2 hours of unadulterated fun, a concept that was sorely lacking this summer, and after having seen the film last night I can vouch for the fact that it's exactly what a summer tentpole should be--fun, funny, nostalgic in places, and heartfelt.

Get On Up

In addition, Chadwick Boseman's portrayal of James Brown in "Get On Up" was less fortunate, opening on the lower end of predictions with $14.0 million for the weekend,  The good news for Universal is that the film also received an A Cinemascore, which should help future week holdovers and judging by social media reaction a majority of the audience was an older demographic, who don't exactly come out in droves on opening weekend.

Elsewhere, "Lucy" took the second spot with $18.2 million, which is a rather steep drop of 58% and "Hercules" took an even bigger stumble, and having had to sit through it Friday night I can understand why, with a second weekend total of $10.7 million.
