It figured that the Luc Besson directed, Internationally set, actioner "Lucy" would eventually rise to the top of the overseas box office and it finally happened this weekend. Foreign auds went all in for a butt-kicking, super smart Scarlett Johansson in the title role, pulling in $34 million for the three days

Lucy

It's taken a bit of time for the Scarlett Johansson actioner "Lucy" to start rolling across the continents but now that it's gaining a footprint in many territories the film has overtaken the late summer superheroes to make it to the top of the box office.  The Luc Besson directed film easily won the weekend, pulling in $34.0 million at the box office, driving its overall cume to $103 million.  "Guardians of the Galaxy" continues to play well in foreign markets as Rocket Raccoon and the gang took in $20.7 million and an overall international cume of $237 million.  Rounding out the top five are "How To Train Your Dragon 2" which hit the $400 million milestone this past weekend, "Expendables 3", which hopes to make back its $95 million negative cost outside of these shores, and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", which has also been slow to roll out but now sits at $93 million overall.

It's always interesting to look at what percentage of worldwide box office each of these titles has garnered from international markets.  On the average, a film grosses 60-65% of its overall cume from overseas markets.  "Dragon 2" is already at slightly north of 70% and shows no signs of slowing down, "Expendables 3" should beat the 65% level in the next two weeks and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" should accomplish this feat by the end of next weekend, further highlighting the importance of foreign box office to the overall take for a film as well as its overall profitability.  We don't see that trend reversing itself any time in the future.  How far north of this 60-65% plateau we go remains to be seen
