I was someone's lucky date to the Westwood premiere of Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel's new comedy, Sex Tape. I was looking forward to a few laughs after seeing the featured trailer on Box Office Insider a few months back, but I was skeptical. Could two actors who had never wed nor had any children be able to portray a married couple with two kids who lost that spark that got them their nuclear family in the first place? Luckily for Sony's Columbia Pictures and the film's producers at Escape Artists, they could. The story transitions from the opening sequence, when the couple meets in college and engages in countless scenes of out-of-control public spectacles of untamed passion through the announcement of their pregnancy when Diaz's on-screen dad grins and says something to the effect of "no more sex for you." I found the comedic progression of their attempt to revive their post-parenthood sex life practically believable, in spite of their outlandish attempts to squash and destroy a leaked recording of their 3-hour sexcapades which says a lot for Jake Kasdan's direction. It also had great heart. Rob Lowe proves once again (like he did in Beyond the Candelabra) that he's not just a pretty boy who made a few sex tapes of his own in his youth; he's actually becoming quite a versatile character actor.
So, get a sitter, take your spouse, and have some fun in the romper room that is your local cinema this weekend. I don't recommend taking your teens — I was especially embarrassed for the male studio executive nearby who brought his daughter to the premiere. I haven't had this much fun in a movie theatre since last summer's The Heat, when the people sitting in front of me repeatedly shushed me for laughing too hard. This time, my date complained to all the other guests at the post-premiere party that he missed half the film because he couldn't hear anything over my belly howling. There is a lot of on-screen nudity for an R-rated film, but the only thing embarrassing about this Sex Tape is you'll be laughing so hard, you may just pee your pants... which is anything but sexy.
