X-Men DOFP

What a difference a year makes.  Last Memorial Day easily set a box office record with a take of over $300 million and included four movies that grossed over $30 million each.  We won't approach that this time around but "X-Men: Days of Future Past" is ready to try its hand at knocking on that ever-elusive $100 million door.  The film opened to $8.1 million in last night's late shows, slightly below "Godzilla"'s take of $9.3 million but still decent.   Kudos to the Marketing and PR departments at Fox as they have secured tie-ins galore and, in addition, the film currently has a score of 93 on the Rotten Tomatoes meter (I'll be nice and not mention the "Blended" score).  The only concern is the fact that the movie is not in Imax, which as we know can drive grosses on a fanboy movie like this, but they will have all of the exhibitor large screen format theatres like AMC's ETX, Regal's RPX, Cinemark's XD and Cineplex's Ultra AVX, to name a few.

Ok enough talk...here's how the three day weekend grosses will look.  Check back throughout the weekend for 3 and 4 day actuals.

1.   X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST---FOX---$84.0 MILLION

2.   GODZILLA---WARNER BROTHERS---$50.2 MILLION---Down 46%

3.   BLENDED---WARNER BROTHERS---$19.0 MILLION

4.   NEIGHBORS---UNIVERSAL---$17.7 MILLION---Down 29%

5.   AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2---SONY---$ 8.7 MILLION---Down 48%

6.   MILLION DOLLAR ARM---BUENA VISTA---$6.1 MILLION---Down 42%

7.   THE OTHER WOMAN---FOX---$4.4 MILLION---Down 29%

8.   HEAVEN IS FOR REAL---SONY/TRI-STAR---$2.9 MILLION---Down 32%

That 45% drop for Godzilla looks very optimistic, for a $90m+ opening, that would have been one of the best holds ever. Captain America; TWS has 56% and that wasn't against another massive tentpole. With a B cinema score adn X-Men: DOFP it's got to be about 60%
