There are usually one or two executives at every studio whose main job it is to attempt to work with the MPAA ratings board to nip here or tuck there to achieve a desired rating for each film. Kudos to whoever that person is at Disney for securing a PG rating for "Maleficent"!

"X-Men: Days Of Future Past"--You have to hand it to Fox they staked a claim to Memorial Day, even in the face of "Godzilla" and Spidey but they pulled it off to the tune of $111 million for the four days. It will be interesting to see where the film goes from here.

"Godzilla" Hefty, But Just Misses Biggest Opening Of The Year With $93.2 Million

A lower than expected Saturday curbed "Godzilla"'s rumble through the box office but the monster movie still roared to $93.2 million, just missing the opening $95 million take of "Captain America: Winter Soldier" for highest opening of the year.

In case you were too busy watching the Spidey numbers come in this weekend, Fox Searchlight's "Belle" was a sensational surprise in its initial openings. The film, which is directed by Amma Asante and stars British TV actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, amassed $104,000 in 4 locations.

Fox Searchlight opens New York and Los Angeles on the film that was the opening night selection at the most recent Palm Springs Film Festival, “Belle”, from director Amma Assante. The film revolves around an illegitimate mixed race daughter of a member of the Royal Navy. Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars in the title role.
