Hey, who knew summer began in August? I must have missed that email. Yet another effect of global warming, apparently. But lo and behold we finally have a summer tentpole worth getting excited about. Online buzz has been through the roof leading up to tomorrow's (tonight at 8:00 PM to be precise) opening of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy"

Looking for some action, bub? Well you've come to the right place. Presented for your approval, we have Scarlett Johansson, equal parts sexy and scary, in "Lucy" and Dwayne Johnson taking the second stab at "Hercules" this year. In addition, Michael Douglas gets cranky in "And So It Goes" and Gabriel Iglesias goes all "Fluffy" on us.

Independence Day for the Indies looks a bit slim as Magnolia's Roger Ebert documentary, "Life Itself", and a 50th anniversary restoration of The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" are the only releases of note.

"Transformers: Age Of Extinction" is currently perched atop the $100 million rock and how the film holds up today will determine whether it can stay there. They may lose the Latino audience who will be glued to TV sets for the Mexico-Netherlands match but in any event it's a powerful opening for Paramount.

That cacophony of crashes, screeches and high octane this-goes-to-11 decimation you hear can only mean two things...it's summer and it's Michael Bay. Yes, both are back with a vengeance this week as Optimus Prime and the rest of the Transformers return in "TF: Age Of Extinction"

It's been a rather silent summer so far on the indie front with films such as "The Rover", "Words and Pictures" and "The Immigrant" failing to gain any traction at the specialty box office. Only "Chef" has enjoyed any kind of tasty returns since the calendar struck June but this week there are some possible box office breakouts.

Back in 2012 Screen Gems brought to the big screen the adaptation of the Steve Harvey man-guide, "Think Like A Man", to surprisingly strong results, debuting at $33.6 million and finishing up at $91 million. The Boys are back, this time heading to Sin City in "Think Like A Man Too".

After misses such as "Mr. Peabody And Sherman" and "Turbo", Dreamworks is back on course, with the stars lining up for "How To Train Your Dragon 2". So far it's been a banner year for family titles and I see no reason why the Katzenberg Kids can't continue that trend with Dragon.
