Despite Saturday Drop, "The Fault In Our Stars" Garners Glorious $48 Million Debut

It's probably better to look at the end rather than the means in the case of "The Fault In Our Stars" this weekend. The end result was a stunning $48.2 million weekend, easily outpacing the competition as tween and older females flocked to the multiplex as if an episode of Oprah's Favorite Things was taping.

There are usually one or two executives at every studio whose main job it is to attempt to work with the MPAA ratings board to nip here or tuck there to achieve a desired rating for each film. Kudos to whoever that person is at Disney for securing a PG rating for "Maleficent"!

"X-Men: Days Of Future Past"--You have to hand it to Fox they staked a claim to Memorial Day, even in the face of "Godzilla" and Spidey but they pulled it off to the tune of $111 million for the four days. It will be interesting to see where the film goes from here.

It certainly is a Happy Memorial Day for everyone at Fox this morning as "X-Men: Days of Future Past" rules the box office with a $90.7 million dollar three day take and $109 million when you figure in Monday. That's above most people's predictions with International grosses yet to come, which should also be huge.

It's yet another race for highest debut of the week as "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" stakes its claim with an outstanding $95 million three day. The film will land over $100 million for the four day but how far north of that level it goes depends upon how it holds up today

A lower than expected Saturday curbed "Godzilla"'s rumble through the box office but the monster movie still roared to $93.2 million, just missing the opening $95 million take of "Captain America: Winter Soldier" for highest opening of the year.
